What Clock Repair Involves
Antique clock repair begins with the understanding that every mechanical clock is individual in its design, condition and history. Older clocks contain finely engineered moving parts that operate under constant metal-to-metal contact and, over time, this inevitably leads to wear, particularly where a clock has not been serviced for many years.
In some cases, reliable operation can be restored through careful cleaning, adjustment and servicing alone. In others, worn or damaged components must be repaired or replaced so that the clock can function correctly and safely. The extent of work required depends entirely on the condition of the movement and how the clock has been treated over its lifetime.
Many clocks have been repaired previously, sometimes using unsuitable methods or materials. Part of the repair process is identifying and correcting earlier work where necessary, so that the clock can continue to run as intended. As with any precision mechanical object, repair costs are determined primarily by the time and skill required rather than the cost of individual parts.
Types of Clocks We Repair
We undertake the inspection and repair of a wide range of mechanical clocks. Each clock is assessed individually, regardless of type or age, and treated with the same care and attention to detail. This includes:
- Longcase clocks
- Mantel clocks
- Desk and bracket clocks
- Wall clocks
- Carriage clocks
- Turret clocks
- Anniversary (torsion) clocks
While the type of clock informs the inspection process, the principles of careful assessment, sympathetic repair and long-term reliability remain consistent throughout.
How We Approach Clock Repair
Each clock entrusted to us is examined carefully and individually. We begin with a full inspection to establish its condition and to determine what work, if any, is required to restore dependable operation.
No repair is undertaken without your approval. We do not carry out work or incur any expense unless full authority has been given. All repairs are carried out with respect for the clock’s age, design and originality, with the aim of preserving it for continued use rather than unnecessary intervention.
While many of our clients are based in Berkshire and the surrounding areas, clocks are accepted for inspection by arrangement from across Great Britain.
